Why Is Your Electrical Panel Buzzing? What the Sound Is Telling You

Why Is Your Electrical Panel Buzzing?

We hear from Winnipeg commercial property managers who are unsettled by sounds coming from their electrical panel, and rightly so. A faint, consistent hum from an electrical panel is often normal: it is the natural vibration produced by electrical current flowing through components under load. But a distinct buzz, a sizzling sound, or a loud and persistent noise is a different matter entirely.

Understanding why your electrical panel is buzzing starts with recognizing that the sound is the panel communicating that something inside the system needs attention. Let’s look at what the buzz is that you keep hearing from your panel, why it happens, and what you should do if you hear it constantly.

Loose Connections Are the Most Common Cause

The most frequent reason we find when investigating a buzzing panel is loose electrical connections. Over time and through repeated cycles of heating under load and cooling at rest, connections inside a panel can loosen. A loose wire or terminal creates resistance at the connection point, which generates heat and causes the vibration that produces a buzzing or sizzling sound. Left uncorrected, loose connections lead to arcing, which is one of the leading causes of electrical fires in buildings.

If your electrical panel is buzzing and the sound is accompanied by a burning smell, warmth near the panel, or discolouration of the panel cover, call a licensed electrician immediately. These are signs of active arcing or overheating that require urgent attention.

An Overloaded or Failing Breaker

A breaker that is struggling to handle its circuit load, or one that has reached the end of its service life, can produce a buzzing or sizzling sound. Breakers are designed to trip when a circuit is overloaded, but aging or faulty breakers may buzz instead of tripping cleanly, or may fail to trip at all. A breaker that buzzes loudly even when appliances on its circuit are switched off is a strong indicator that the breaker itself needs to be inspected and likely replaced.

Electrical Arcing

Arcing occurs when electrical current jumps across a gap, such as between a loose wire and a terminal. It produces a buzzing or crackling sound and generates intense heat in a very localized area. Arcing is serious. It can ignite surrounding materials and cause a fire even when no other symptoms are visible. If buzzing in your electrical panel with a sound that resembles crackling or sizzling, this should be treated as an emergency and a licensed electrician should be called without delay.

When the Hum Is Normal

As noted above, a very faint hum from an electrical panel is generally the result of normal electrical current vibration and is not a cause for alarm. This is most noticeable during periods of high electrical demand, such as when HVAC systems start up. The distinction between a normal operational hum and a concerning buzz is one of volume, persistence, and whether it is accompanied by other signs such as heat, smell, or visible damage.

Do Not Ignore a Buzzing Panel

The consistent message from every investigation we conduct is this: when your electrical panel is buzzing in a way that seems unusual or has recently changed, the right response is to have it inspected promptly, not to wait and see.
